  • The NES game Quarth, or "Quarth," is a logic shooter originally developed in 1989 for an arcade machine in Japan. In Europe and the U.S. the arcade machine was called differently, Block Hole. The game was later re-released for various other platforms, including the NES.

The Quarth's gameplay is a mixture of a logic genre like Tetris and a shooter like Galaxian. The player, controlling the spaceship, moves forward along a corridor in which there are obstacles in the form of blocks. These blocks must be destroyed to clear a path. The spaceship itself can only move horizontally and fires similar blocks (of which the obstacles are made). To destroy an obstacle in front of him, the player must shoot the blocks so that they form a complete figure, then the blocks will disappear and bonus points will be earned.

Moving along the corridor the speed of the ship periodically changes to complicate the game, as well as the blocks (obstacles) themselves form more complex figures, then simple. Quarth provides different modes of play, including for two players. When playing doubles, it is possible to play with the screen divided into two parts, as well as together, in one corridor. In general, Quarth is an excellent game with a good mix of different genres, the undoubted advantage of which is the two-player mode.
