  • The NES game Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2, is an arcade platformer developed in 1987 for the arcade machine in Japan. The game was later ported to various other platforms, including the NES. The literal translation of Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 is "Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2", but the game is more popularly known as Rainbow Islands.

The plot of Rainbow Islands requires the main characters to save Rainbow Islands from a villain named Dark Shadow, who is known from the previous Bubble and Bobble game. In fact, the game Rainbow Islands is a sequel to the beloved game about dragons - Bubble Bobble, but now the main characters are presented in human form. By the way, in the US release, the heroes are called differently - Bubby and Bobby, and they differ from each other, as well as in all game releases, only by the color of their clothes. The game takes place on an archipelago of ten islands, each island is a different location with its own design and consists of four stages.

The gameplay of Rainbow Islands meets all the standards of the games of the genre, the characters can run, jump, as well as shoot rainbows. Rainbows are used by the characters not only as weapons for striking enemies, but also as a coaster for climbing high platforms. The movement of the characters in the levels is from the bottom up on the platforms, and when standing still for a long time, water begins to rise from the bottom, flooding the lower platforms, trampling the player. The levels of Rainbow Islands have a lot of different secrets and hiding places. The game features a two-player mode, but only in alternating rather than cooperative mode as in past installments.
