  • The NES game Pooyan, or simply "Piggies," is an arcade shooter developed originally in Japan for the arcade machine, in 1982. The game was later re-released on various other platforms, including the NES. The name of the game itself Pooyan (Po Yan) translates from Japanese as "Piggies".

The plot of Pooyan is rather simple and short: there lived a family of pigs - the mother pig and her children - piglets. One day one of the piglets, on a walk, was kidnapped by a wolf, and to save him from death, the mother with the rest of the piglets goes to the rescue of her baby. Wolves live in a large pack and to defeat them the pig needs to get into their lair. The battlefield is a one-type location with a cliff, where the pig is hanging in a basket hanging down, and the piglets are lowering it with a rope or lifting it up beneath the cliff. The player's task is to shoot the balloons on which the wolves descend to the bottom of the cliff.

The gameplay of Pooyan is quite peculiar, the player controls both the pig, shooting wolves and piglets with his bow, adjusting the level of lowering the basket from the cliff. Shooting the wolf, it falls down and breaks, but if the wolf comes down to the foot of the cliff not shot down, it climbs a ladder closer to the pig and the basket can no longer be lowered to this level, i.e. the game becomes more difficult. In addition, wolves can also attack the pig when flying on balls, they throw fruit at it and if hit the pig loses its life.

On the whole, Pooyan is a rather fun and addictive game, and the two-player mode is a definite plus.
